Managing care quality and risk in delivery of home healthcare with Project E-vita

Scandals such as that shown in Mid-Staffordshire NHS highlighted failure in the management of quality and risk in a healthcare environment. The government’s response called for increased demands on healthcare providers (Under a review of the Care Quality Commission) to deliver transparent auditable processes for monitoring incidents and complaints and provide frameworks for patients and healthcare professionals to feel comfortable in highlighting issues / failures.

Delivering healthcare in patients’ own homes as opposed to a hospital environment presents unique challenges in managing quality & risk. Remotely monitoring the quality of care delivered, and trapping complaints or incidents, requires special mobile solutions to enable capture of information as quickly as possible and as near to the point of delivery of care.

Careplans in Project E-vita are a mechanism for the establishment of a planned pathway of clinical and administrative procedures for a patient through to their eventual discharge. Deviations or exceptions are centrally monitored on a “service dashboard”. The entire pathway is mapped out in the Careplan and ad-hoc tasks can be added as the patient progresses through the treatment process. The service dashboard integration gives management a powerful oversight on what services have or have not been delivered to patients in a live feed environment and enabling them to make decisions on how best to deal with any exceptions.

Incident & Complaint Management
Careplans are designed to minimise the chance of error and are the first line of defence in managing risk in healthcare environments through there is always the chance of something going wrong. Incident and Complaint management make it easy for healthcare professionals to safely record directly onto a patient record that an incident has occurred or that a complaint has been received from a patient or their relatives. As with Careplans, Incident and Complaint cases are fully integrated into the service dashboard to quickly raise a flag with the team management that an issue has arisen and start a chain of events to manage the situation. Cases are followed up in a timely manner using the system’s review cycle and activities (Telephone calls, letters written etc) are all recorded in a comprehensive audit log providing a transparent and confidential trail showing the steps taken to resolve the situation.

Targeting Home Healthcare & Telehealth markets with new release of Project E-vita

Evaware has this week launched version 10 of their Project E-vita hosted Electronic Patient Record solution. Version 10 continues the strategy of bringing the capture of clinical information as close to the point of delivery of care by making Project E-vita available for Smartphones, Tablets as well as Desktop devices. Home Healthcare provision requires capture of clinical coding, imagery and medical narrative instantaneously, to allow review by monitoring clinicians. Enabling patient encounter recording on all devices Project E-vita brings the clinician into the patient’s own home. With government and private sector budgets under increasing pressure, Home Healthcare is increasingly being seen as a solution to avoiding costly hospitalisation for treatment while at the same time giving improved patient recovery times. Evaware will offer a wide assortment of equipment for patients to use in their own homes for remote monitoring by physicians of their wellbeing as part of the management of chronic / long term conditions. Telehealth reduces hospitalisation costs and unnecessary patient inconvenience. Previously Telehealth required the inclusion of expensive in-home “hubs” to connect monitoring equipment to their patient record but the advancement of Smartphone and similar device technology has removed this need.
